Chapter 15: Gifts, Roses and Watches
“President, here are some documents that require your approval and signature,” said Miranda.
“Thanks, just leave it on the table please,” replied Park Jungsu, who was busy looking at his monitor.
“And, Manager Kim would like to arrange a lunch meeting with you regarding the upcoming press conference for Jin Wook’s new album release,” informed Miranda, who was waiting for Park Jungsu’s reply.

“President?”
“Ne…?” uttered Park Jungsu, where his eyes refuse to leave his own computer screen.
“Regarding the lunch meeting with Manager Kim?” Miranda asked again.
“Have him meet me here in my office in the morning instead, either tomorrow or the day after,” replied Park Jungsu, who didn't look at Miranda at all throughout their conversation.
Miranda nodded. Just as she was about to make her way out of the office, Park Jungsu stopped her and said, “Miranda, I want to ask you something.”
She turned around and responded, “Yes President?”
“If, I’m saying ‘if’ someone accidently damaged your handbag, how would you react?” asked Park Jungsu.
“Well, that person better apologize and pay for the damages done to my handbag then,” answered Miranda.
“I mean…would you yell at them or like scold at them angrily?” asked Park Jungsu, wanting to learn some women’s behavioural psychology.
Miranda chuckled and answered, “It really depends on the situation.”
“The situation…? What do you mean?” he wanted to clarify further.
“Well, I mean it depends on whether it’s in a public or private place. You know? Like whether there are lots of people around or not. Plus, it also depends on the person,” Miranda tried to explain. “For different women, they might react differently depending on the place of the incident. Some might lose themselves and scream at the top of their lungs. Those are most likely to be the ahjummas and they won’t give up until they humiliate that person in front of everyone. Then there are some who would ask the person in a stern voice to apologize and pay for the damages without making a big scene, which I consider myself to be that type.” She smiled while stating her last sentence.
“But what if the girl didn’t say anything to that person and didn’t even give him a single glance afterwards?” Park Jungsu continued to ask, clearly referring to the incident at the restaurant.
“Hmm? Interesting… Either the girl doesn’t really care about her handbag or she’s extremely upset to the point that she doesn’t even want to deal with that person or that guy for the time being. Usually these types of girls are the calm and composed types who are very careful with their actions and would observe their surroundings before they act. These are good traits to have for a girlfriend or partner for life. Well, let’s just hope that person or that guy isn’t the boyfriend or even worst trying to court the girl,” explained Miranda while placing her hand under her chin, as if she was talking to herself.
“Why?” asked Park Jungsu shortly after Miranda’s last statement.
Miranda turned to her president and said, “Because if that person was her boyfriend, he’ll probably get the silent treatment for a few days if lucky and he’ll have to get her a brand new handbag. However, if it was the latter part, then chances of him getting into a relationship with that girl is close to nil since he already gave a bad impression to that girl. He’ll probably have to work a thousand times harder to get the girl if he’s serious about her. All I can say is good luck to that guy if he was in the latter part of the situation.”
After hearing Miranda’s theory, Park Jungsu fell back to his seat while closing his eyes and lets out a deep sigh. “What am I going to do now?” he thought to himself worriedly.
Miranda saw Park Jungsu’s reaction after her last statement and asked, “Is everything okay, President?”
All that came out from Park Jungsu was another deep sigh. Then it finally came to Miranda’s senses, she took a glimpse of what Park Jungsu was looking at on his computer when he’s not looking. “Omo, so whose handbag did you break, President? And who is that lucky girl that caught the eyes of our President-nim?” Miranda asked excitedly while scrolling down the webpage of designer handbags.
“Hmm?” Park Jung was confused for a second until he finally realized Miranda had figured out what was bothering him. He quickly jolted up and said, “Yah! What are you doing?” as he quickly closed his internet browser.
“No wonder for the past few weeks, you’ve asked me to reschedule most of your meetings – so it’s all because of a girl,” Miranda said teasingly.
“Don’t you have work to do, Miranda? Hurry and schedule the meeting with Manager Kim,” said Park Jungsu, trying to brush off the topic.
Miranda chuckled and said, “Arasso President, arasso. I’ll get back to work then.” Before she exits his office, she turned around and advised him, “Just remember to apologize sincerely, President.”
Park Jungsu was sitting at his desk, thinking to himself, “Yah! Park Jungsu, let go of your pride and call to apologize to her.” He thought again, “Wae? Why should I? She should have gotten a better handbag. Where did she even get that handbag from that breaks so easily?” Then he mumbled, “Aish! Okay…” and took out his mobile phone. He searched for Sora’s contact and opened it. With his thumb over the keypad on the screen, he was contemplating whether to hit the call button or not. Just when he was about to hit the call button, his phone suddenly rang in his hand which startled him. It was Donghae who was calling.
He answered the call, “Yeopseo.”
“Hyung! What are you doing right now?” Donghae asked on the other side of the phone.
“I was about to make a phone call. Wae?” Park Jungsu replied.
“I need your help with something! Can you meet up with me right now?” said Donghae.
“Need my help? With what?” he asked Donghae, not knowing what Donghae was up to.
“I’ll tell you when I see you. Meet me at the COEX mall,” Donghae answered in a hurry and ended the call straight away.
“Yah! Lee Donghae! Yeopseo?” he uttered over the phone when the call has already ended. He let out a sigh and began to make his way out of his office.
***
“Hyung! Over here!” Donghae called out to Park Jungsu.
Park Jungsu heard Donghae’s call and headed over towards his direction.
“Why’d you call me out suddenly?” he asked Donghae.
“Well, I need your advice on something,” said Donghae, with a cute smile on his face.
Park Jungsu raised his eyebrow, unaware of what help Donghae wants from him. “Advice on what?” he asked.
With a big smile on Donghae’s face, he shyly said, “If I want to get something for a girl, what kind of gift would be suitable?”
Park Jungsu laughed, happy to find Donghae finally being more attentive to buying gifts for women. He then asked, “And who is this girl that you are planning to buy a gift for?”
Donghae began to rub the back of his neck, trying to ease off his shyness and said, “I want to buy something for Sora-ssi.” Donghae then couldn’t help himself from smiling helplessly with the thought of Sora on his mind.
However, the smile on Park Jungsu’s face instantly vanished after what Donghae had just said. He tried to make the unpleased look on his face to be less noticeable by forcing a smile as he asked, “Why would you suddenly buy something for her? You’ve only met her a few times.”
With the happy grin still on Donghae’s face, he answered, “Well, I want to ask her out on a date and I want to buy her something nice so that Sora-ssi can think of me whenever she sees it.”
From what Donghae just said, it got Park Jungsu feeling like he was holding onto a fine string of rope that was about to break. He was feeling unease and was definitely not happy with the idea of Donghae asking Sora, the girl whom he kissed and wants for himself, to go out on a date with.
“Andwae! You can’t!” said Park Jungsu anxiously.
His sudden response startled Donghae. “Oh? Waeyo? Why can’t I?” asked Donghae, who looked confused.
“Because…” Park Jungsu was trying to come up with an excuse, but was having trouble finding one. He didn’t want to tell Donghae that he actually wants Sora for his own because he doesn’t want to hurt Donghae. However, if he doesn’t tell Donghae, just by the mere thought of them going out together would tear his insides out.
“…Because of what, Hyung?” Donghae asked desperately.
“Because you’re not her type,” said Park Jungsu, coming up with a lame excuse when he doesn’t even know what Sora’s ideal type is.
“Not her type? But hyung, how would you know that I’m not her type? Did she tell you that?” asked Donghae.
“Well, let’s just say I don’t think you’re her ideal type,” said Park Jungsu.
“Eh….Hyung, that’s just your perception. I’ll still give it try and if I’m really not her type then I guess being friends with her would be okay too,” said Donghae with optimism.
From Donghae’s last statement, Park Jungsu didn’t know whether to feel relieved or not. But then again, he shouldn’t be so selfish and should let Donghae have a go at it as much as he doesn’t like the idea.
“Fine, just make sure you don’t come crying to me if things don’t work out,” he told Donghae.
“Don’t worry hyung! I’ll try to make the best out of it!” said Donghae while giving his hyung a wink. “Come on! Let’s go inside the department store here to have a look.”
So they entered inside the department store that sells several name branded products. Park Jungsu followed behind Donghae, who was busy looking at different merchandises. He looked around until he came across the area with different kinds of designer handbags. Brand names from Hermès to Prada, all neatly displayed on the counters and shelves.
"Is there anything I can help you with, sir?" a staff lady came up and asked.
Park Jungsu hesitated a bit and said, "Umm...I'm looking for a handbag for someone,"
"Ah...I see....So you're looking for a handbag for your girlfriend?" asked the staff, trying to gather more information in order for her to help him find a suitable handbag.
"Uh...yes, I mean no. Well what I mean is, she's not my girlfriend girlfriend yet, but a girl that's kind of my friend. Do you know what I mean?" Park Jungsu trying to explain to the female staff with an uncertain look on his face.
The female staff chuckled and said, "So you want to get this girl a handbag in order to take your current relationship with her further to the next level, am I getting this correctly, sir?"
Park Jungsu felt slightly shy and embarrassed from what the staff lady had just analyzed and said. However, he nodded in reply confirming her analysis. So then the staff lady asked, "So how does this girl of yours look like, for instance her personality and traits?"
Her question just now strikes him like lightning. He didn't really know much about Sora, not even her favourite colour and such. He embarrassingly said, "Well, I don't really know since I just met her about a few weeks ago. But, she can get irritated easily, but in a cute way. As much as she's not happy with one's idea, she'll try her best to please and work things out for the benefit of the other person. She's quite tall and she has a very...how should I put it...? Umm...a unique attitude." A slight grin appeared on his face all the way through when he was explaining to the staff lady while reminiscing about the times when she gave him the annoyed look, the time when he kissed her and the time when she looked at him closely.
The staff lady smiled in admiration by his mere description and asked, "Sir, so this girl must be a very honest, intelligent and an open-minded person then. Am I correct?"
He pouted with his puckered lips and slowly nodded in agreement with what she had just said.
Straightly afterwards, the staff lady showed him a few handbags that would suit the descriptions of his girl. There he was trying to find a colour that he thinks would fit her well. He was choosing between four different colours --white, sapphire blue, red and black.
After a few minutes of contemplation, he finally made his decision and said, "I'll take this one," pointing his selection with his finger. He took out his black credit card and paid for the handbag.
Just then Donghae came looking for Park Jungsu and found him at the checkout counter.
“Hyung! Oh? You bought a handbag? Who is it for?” Donghae asked with a smile while holding his own prize.
Park Jungsu smile and said, “It’s nothing special, just a gift for a business affiliate.” The staff lady handed him his purchase. “What did you end up getting?” he asked Donghae while heading off.
Donghae took out a small black velvet box from its bag and said, “Tada!” as he opened the box. Inside was a lady’s watch with sparkling crystals attached around the bezel. “I bought her a watch, so that she can think of me when she looks at the time,” replied Donghae with a happy grin on his face.
“You think she would wear that?” asked Park Jungsu who was clearly taken over by his jealousy.
“Hyung! Wae? You don’t think she will?” Donghae anxiously asked.
Park Jungsu shrugged and said, “I was just wondering, that’s all.” After retrieving what they came for, they both made their way out of the department store.
***
The next day, a man walked up to Melissa’s desk with a bouquet of red roses and said, “Excuse me miss, I have a delivery for Miss Kang Sora.”
Melissa looked up and was astounded by the large bouquet of red roses. She signed the receipt and excitedly speed walked to Sora’s office. Just by a few quick knocks on Sora’s door, she didn’t even wait for Sora to answer and entered her office right away.
“Oh my god! Sora! Someone sent these over for you! So who have you been seeing lately? Oh my! And these are so beautiful!” said Melissa excitedly while gazing the bouquet of red roses in admiration.
“I haven’t been seeing anyone lately other than those who are very annoying and arrogant. Plus, with all these work on my table waiting to be cleared, you think I have time to go out?” said Sora who only took a quick glance at the roses. She looked rather stressed with the workload in front of her.
Melissa kept looking at her and said, “Well? There’s a card here. Aren’t you going to see who these are from?”
Sora kept her focus on her work and replied, “If you’re curious, you can open it and see who those are from.”
“Really? You sure? I’m going to open it then,” said Melissa who was already opening the card from its envelope.
“Knock yourself out with it,” said Sora with a smile as she flips through her documents.
Melissa took the card out and read it out loud, “Hope these wonderful red roses will brighten up your day…Minho.”
Sora looked up while Melissa stared at her with a smirk. “Yes? Is there anything I can help you with Melissa?” asked Sora, clearly knowing why Melissa was giving her that look.
Melissa took the seat in front of Sora’s desk and then leaned forward. “So, how long has it been? When did you both start?” she asked, showing her curious side again.
Sora chuckled and said, “Melissa, you’re getting way ahead of yourself and you’re thinking too much. We didn’t start anything and there’s nothing there for us to start anyways. Besides, I’m sure Minho-ssi was just being a nice gentleman.”
“Sure…. A nice gentleman, who sends red roses over hoping to brighten up your day,” argued Melissa, obviously not agreeing with the reason that Sora had suggested. “Oh, these are so beautiful. If only my boyfriend would send me these once in a while,” said Melissa, who was lightly touching the rose petals with her fingers.
Sora saw how the admirable expression on Melissa’s face and said with a smile, “If you want them, you can have them.”
Melissa shocked and said, “What!? These are for you Sora-ah! You can’t just give it to someone else. Think about it, when was the last time you received a bouquet of beautiful red roses?”
Sora began to think back, trying to trace back the last time she had received flowers from someone and murmured, “It has been a long while ever since we….” She stopped and sighed.
Melissa saw the look on Sora’s face. It was apparent that Sora was reminiscing about her past and Melissa who has been not only a secretary, but also a long-time friend of hers knows what she was thinking about. “Oh Sora-ah, just forget about the past and let it go. That jerk is not worth thinking about! Let me help you find a vase and put these wonderful roses up!”
Sora just smiled, but deep in her mind she began to reminisce about her last relationship, the one she thought she had let go and forget about a long time ago.
When Melissa opened Sora’s office door to make her way out, a man stood at the door with his hand up, ready to knock on the door.
“Omo! You scared me!” said Melissa in fright while placing her hand on her chest to calm herself.
“Hi! I’m looking for Sora-ssi,” he said with a bright smile on his face.
Sora looked up and saw Donghae standing at the door. She smiled and said, “Well hello there Donghae-ssi. How nice it is to see you. Is there anything I can help you with?”
Donghae walked in and said, “Nice to see you too Sora-ssi.” He kept the smile on his face and continued, “I was just wondering if you have time to have lunch together. I have something I’d like to talk to you about.”
“Sure! I have something I’d like to talk to you about too,” Sora quickly answered.
Donghae was speechless for a moment as he didn’t think Sora would accept the invitation rather this fast. “Um…shall we head out now or should I give you a few more minutes,” he said while eyeing at the piles of work in front of Sora.
“No worries, let’s head out now,” she answered and then turned to Melissa, “Melissa, I’ll be heading out for lunch now, if there’s anything urgent just call my mobile, alright?”
“Alright I will. But where would you like me to put the red roses that Mr. Minho-ssi sent?” asked Melissa.
“You can decide. You can put them on your desk if you want,” Sora said with a smile as she gathers her belonging.
“Oh? Somebody sent you those red roses? It’s not from your boyfriend is it?” asked Donghae, laughing. Although he sounded like he was joking, but he was trying to see if it’s the case or not.
Sora laughed and said, “I don’t have a boyfriend, Donghae-ssi. Come on, let’s go! Are we taking your car?”
“Jjinja?” Donghae asked with smiled. He then nodded and said, “Yeah, we’ll take my car.” He escorted her out of her office.
On their way out to the restaurant, Sora said, “Wow Donghae-ssi, you drive rather smoothly.”
Donghae smiled and glanced over at Sora. “Well, I have to since I’m driving a pretty lady out for lunch,” he said as he focuses back on the road.
“So have you ever tried drifting and dodging through cars on the road before?” she continued to ask.
“I have and I think I’m rather good at it too,” boasted Donghae, who clearly has no idea why he was being asked these questions.
“So, have you ever tried cutting in in front of a red Mercedes before?” asked Sora.
SCREECH!
Donghae stomped on the brakes on a red light, sending Sora forward and back to her seat. He looked at Sora and asked, “You already know that was me?”
Sora smiled and nodded as Donghae asked, “How did you know it was me?”
“It doesn’t matter how I know. All I wanted to know is why you cut in in front of me?” she asked.
“Well, at first I saw you from behind and could see you dodging through cars yourself. So at that moment, I really wanted to see who the driver was and so I sped up to have a glimpse. But since the lights were about to change and I needed to make a right turn on that street – I had no choice but to cut in in front of you so that I won’t miss my turn. I’m really sorry Sora-ssi, I hope I didn’t cause much trouble,” Donghae explained.
“Well, other than I almost got into an accident, bruising my forehead and getting my car confiscated – I’m all in one piece,” said Sora with smile.
“Omo! I really didn’t mean to cause that much trouble. I’m really really sorry, Sora-ssi. Please forgive me!” pleaded Donghae, who finally confessed for his action.
“Arasso arasso. You can treat me to lunch now as an apology,” she told Donghae and then thought to herself, “Unlike someone, who didn’t even apologize for their own actions!”
After settling down inside the restaurant, they talked about different stories that happened on the road while driving and all. Both laughed at the different situations and incidents while having their lunch. While finishing up their meals, Donghae looked at Sora and said, “Sora-ssi, I have something that I would like to ask you.”
Sora was still working on the last bits of her meal and asked, “What is it Donghae-ssi?”
“Um…I was wondering…uh…” he hesitated. Then he took a deep breath and finally got the courage to ask, “I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me?”
“What did you just say…? A date?” said Sora, who was taken aback from what Donghae had just asked.
“I really think you’re pretty and just now I felt very comfortable talking about cars and driving with you. I feel like we have different things in common,” he explained as he took out the watch he bought yesterday and handed to Sora. “I bought this for you, hoping you would like it,” he said while opening the box.
Sora saw the beautiful watch that was inside and was dumbfound by the shimmering shiny crystals. She didn’t really know what to say or how to react. In fact, she wasn’t quite ready to start a relationship.
“It’s really beautiful Donghae-ssi. But I’m afraid I cannot accept it,” she said as she closed the box and handed it back to Donghae.
“Wae? Could you tell me why you can’t accept it?” asked Donghae, who felt slightly disappointed.
“Look Donghae-ssi, you are a wonderful man, really. It is fun talking to you and it helps me relax knowing we can hang out like this during a stressful day at work. I really like you as a good friend and I wish it to remain this way. I hope you can understand,” said Sora, who didn’t want to give Donghae the wrong idea and thus she had to be frank with him.
Donghae sighed and remain silent for a moment. He then smiled, lifting his head up to look at Sora and said, “Thank you Sora-ssi for considering me as a good friend and telling me straight out that we can’t be more than that.”
“Donghae-ssi, I didn’t mean to—” Sora tried to explain but was cut off by Donghae.
“No no Sora-ssi, I understand. I just want to say that it’s cool and there’s no need for you to feel sorry. Sometimes, it’s better to be frank and straight forward when it comes to relationships. At least, you didn’t wait until the feelings got deeper to tell me that it we can’t be. For that, I want to say thank you. I’ve been in a few relationships before and most of the girls I met didn’t really take me all that seriously. Almost all of them broke up with me when I was in too deep like having already invested so much feeling into the relationship that it was difficult for me to face the breakup. Usually, I would have to find out the hard way, like seeing them together with someone else behind my back and couldn’t tell me straight out. So, I’m really happy that you told me your answer right away. At least now, I know where our relationship stands and I’m totally cool with being friends,” Donghae explained, telling Sora a bit of his past relationships.
“Donghae-ssi…” Sora called out his name, feeling a bit sorry for rejecting him.
“But! I have two requests!” said Donghae all of a sudden, as if nothing had just happened.
“Oh? Two requests? What is it?” asked Sora, who was surprised by Donghae’s sudden change.
“Number one, can we be like best buddies? So that we can hang out like this more often,” Donghae stated his first request.
Sora felt relieved, which brought a smile on her face. She chuckled and said, “Best buddies it is then. And your second request?”
“Good then, my second request is for you to keep this watch. Consider it as a gift and a mark of our relationship as best buddies, okay?” said Donghae, stating his final request with a bright smile. “And, I won’t take ‘No’ for an answer!” he stated, looking very optimistic and happy like nothing happened.
Sora hesitated for a bit as she felt the watch was too expensive to accept, but then Donghae said he wouldn’t take ‘No’ for an answer. So then she finally said, “Fine, I’ll take it. However, I’ll need to get you something in return so that we both have something to mark our friendship and I also won’t take ‘No’ for answer. Arasso?”
Donghae replied happily, “Arasso!” as he held out his hand for a handshake.
Both of them shook hands while laughing and enjoyed the rest of their lunch together.
***
After having lunch together, Donghae drove Sora back to her office. He waved her goodbye and drove off. Sora was happy that Donghae took her answer rather calmly and optimistically. When she got back to her office, Melissa was waiting for her, wanting to find out the details from her lunch date.
As soon as Melissa saw Sora walking in, she quickly stood up and followed Sora straight into the office.
“So…? What happen? Why that friend of President Park came looking for you and asking you out for lunch?” she asked Sora excitedly.
Sora smile and said, “Melissa, now I’m starting to wonder why you didn’t become a reporter instead?”
Melissa ignored Sora’s last statement and continued, “Well…? Does he like you? Did he ask you out? Omo! Sora-ah, it’s like cupid is shooting lots of love arrows around you. First, it’s Mr. Minho-ssi and now it’s Mr. Donghae-ssi.” Melissa clapped her hands in joy and excitement, as if she was the one who was going through it all. She turned and stared at Sora, waiting for her answer.
Sora shook her head with a smile and said, “We’re just good friends, Melissa. Stop thinking way ahead of yourself. Besides, I’m not in a hurry to get into another relationship this soon. So you can keep dreaming.”
“Wae? You can only forget about the past when you start anew. Why don’t you give love another chance or better yet, give yourself a chance,” said Melissa who was trying to convince Sora.
“I’m happy with right now. I have a great job, wonderful parents and friends. What more could I ask for?” said Sora as she opened up the documents before her and began to work again.
Melissa placed her hand on the document that was in Sora’s hand and said, “Okay Sora! Look! I’m speaking to you as a friend right now. You just have to let a new relationship blossom in your life. The past is gone like a withered flower and it’s not going to come back and even if it does, you know very well that it’s not worth your love and care anymore.”
Sora chuckled and said, “You’re more naggy than my parents, you know? They’re trying to rush me into getting married and now you’re telling me to find someone. Maybe I should become a nun so that I won’t be bothered by this.”
“Sora-ah, we just want you to be truly happy that’s all,” explained Melissa.
Sora placed her hand on Melissa’s and said, “I know, but I’m just not ready for another one right now. But I’ll promise you one thing and that is I won’t refuse the relationship if I find someone who can truly make me happy, okay?” She assured Melissa by firmly gripping her hand.
Melissa smiled while placing her other hand on Sora’s and said, “Fine, you promised.”
Sora laughed and nodded. “Now, can I get back to work?” she asked.
“Arasso, you can get back to work while I do the same! Oh and by the way, I placed the roses over there.” said Melissa, pointing to the coffee in the sitting area of her office before making her way out of Sora’s office.
Sora stared at the roses on the table and thought to herself, “The love I want is just like the roses over there, far from my reach and I can only stare at it before me from far.”
Just then, her mobile began to ring. She looked at it and closed her eyes as soon as she saw the caller ID.
“Aish! What does he want now? Does he really have nothing to do?” Sora uttered out loud. She let it ring for a few more times before picking up. “Yeopseo?” she said when she answered the call.
“Hey, it’s me…” said the voice on the other side of the phone.
“Yes, I know it’s you, President Park! And how may I help you on a busy afternoon?” Sora asked.
“How are you today?” Park Jungsu on the other side of the phone asked.
“Busy,” Sora replied with a one-word answer, clearly not in the mood to talk to him.
“Great! I’ll send someone over to pick you up at seven tonight. So be ready by then,” said Park Jungsu, who ended the call right after.
“Wait! Hello? Yah! Park Jungsu! Who does he think he is? Aish!” Sora shouted over the phone. She tossed her phone on the table and shuffled her hair. “This is not the first time that he’s done this! What does he want? Aish!”
CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!

Aish!”
