Chapter 25: Avoidance
After trying on several dresses for a few hours at the store, Sora finally found a decent dress to wear for the charity event that was happening on Sunday. She chose a dress that even Melissa was stunned and had her jaw dropped when she saw Sora in it.
“You look amazing, Sora! I’m not even kidding. Wow!” Melissa remarked as she admired how well the dress fit Sora.
“Does it really?” she asked as she turned around and looked at herself in the mirror.
“Of course! I mean if I was a man, I’d do anything to take you out on a date.”
She chuckled at Melissa’s remark. “Alright Melissa, now you’re just over exaggerating.”
“No, I’m not! I’m being serious!”
“I’ll take this one then, thank you,” she told the staff at the store as she took one last look at herself in the mirror with the dress on. “I wonder if he’s going to ask me to go with him,” she thought to herself in her own reflection.
…
After changing back to her normal clothes, she went to the counter to pay for the dress. The staff asked her where she would like to have the dress delivered once they finish the tailoring.
She paused for a moment and turned to Melissa. “Melissa, can I leave your address with them?”
“My address?” Melissa asked with surprise, pointing at her herself.
She looked at Melissa and nodded in reply.
“Waeyo? Why don’t you send it over to President Park’s place?”
“Just give them your address and I’ll explain it to you later.” She motioned Melissa closer to the counter and had her provide her address to the staff.
As they left the store, they went to a nearby café for a rest. Once their coffee came, Melissa began to ask why Sora didn’t want the dress sent over to Park Jungsu’s place.
With her hands holding onto her cup and gazing into her cappuccino, she told Melissa that she doesn’t know how to face Park Jungsu right now. The fact that she longs for him, but not being able to have him makes her heart aches, especially when they are staying this close together at his place. “I just feel that rather than make myself go through each day not being able to have him when I want him, maybe I shouldn’t stay at his place.”
“But have you talked to him about it? I mean, you just moved in with him, despite being a temporary thing and now you want to move out?” Melissa asked as she sipped on her coffee.
Sora let out a long sigh and looked at Melissa who was sitting across from her. “Well, I think it’s the best thing to do right now. If I talk to him about it, wouldn’t that be awkward if I asked him ‘why don’t you want to sleep with me’? I don’t want to be like that even if I yearn for him whenever he kisses me.”
Melissa took a moment to think as she watched Sora’s grimed face. Then she held Sora’s hand and suggested, “Alright Sora, why don’t you come and stay over at my place until your place is all fixed up, this will probably give you both some time to think about your current relationship.”
“Can I? Would that be too much inconvenience for you?”
“Of course not, you can stay over at my place. But, you might have to wait until I clear up the guest room as I recently did some renovating and moved some things over to that room. Would that be okay though?”
She took a few seconds to consider before accepting Melissa’s offer. “Yeah, if that isn’t too much trouble for you, I think I can manage a few days more.”
“Alright then, I’ll fix up the guest room as soon as I can,” said Melissa.
She thanked Melissa for her hospitality and they both continued with their coffee at the café. At least after the event, she wouldn’t have to feel the way she felt right now – insecure. The only issue now was how to tell him about her decision to move out of his place after the upcoming event on Sunday.
***
After hanging out with his buddies, Park Jungsu dropped by the supermarket to get some groceries and daily supplies before returning home.
Once he got home, he went upstairs to his wardrobe and cleared one of the racks and drawers for Sora as he promised yesterday. Then he went into the bathroom and replaced his toothbrush with two new ones, a blue and a pink one. Having Sora temporarily move in with him was enough to light up his life as he began to imagine what it would be like if she was here to stay for the long run, without having to move back to her own place after it gets fixed up. He looked at the preparations he had prepared for her in his home, hopeful that they would make her stay with him more enjoyable and happy.
He then headed downstairs and plumped down on his sofa in the living room as he took out his phone. With his phone in his hand, he began to type a message to her on Kakao talk.
Hey, what time will you be back?
“Aish! You can’t just ‘Hey’ your girlfriend like that, Park Jungsu!” he mumbled to himself. Then he deleted it without sending it out and retyped another one.
Take care on your way back, Sora-ah. I’ll be waiting for you at home.
Satisfied with what he just wrote, he sent out the message and made his way to the kitchen. With the groceries he got earlier, he began to prepare dinner so that when she comes back, it will be ready by then. As he was cooking, the notification sound from his phone rang and it was a message from Sora. He picked up his phone and read the message as his face glowed with happiness.
I will, oppa. I’m on my way back now. See you soon.
…
An hour later, Sora finally drove into the driveway. She got out of her car and made her way to the front door. When she entered, she could smell the nice aroma coming from the kitchen. As she slowly made her way to the kitchen, she saw Park Jungsu cooking with an apron on. While watching him prepare dinner in the kitchen, she couldn’t help but to feel content. Having a man who she’s in love with cook for her was one thing she had wished for since she was young. However, when the thought of how he had pulled back during those times reminded her that it was really hard to understand exactly how he really feels about her and made her feel anxious whenever she’s near him.
Sensing someone from behind, he glanced back and saw Sora standing on the side. His face lit up quickly from the mere sight of her. “Ah, you’re back, Sora-ah,” he said as he turned down the heat from the stove and walked over to her while wiping his hand with a wet towel.
The closer he got, the faster her heart raced. She didn’t know how to react if he kissed her on the spot or even touch her. When he was about to embrace her, she quickly walked over to the stove to avoid coming in contact with him. “Yes, I’m back. What is it that you’re cooking right now?” she asked, trying to lessen his suspicion.
Feeling a bit startled at first, he made his way beside her. “I’m cooking pasta right now. In the meantime, why don’t you go upstairs and freshen up a bit,” he suggested, smiling as he placed his hand on her lower back.
As soon as she sensed his touch, her body surged with a tingling sensation that she wished she hadn’t felt. She immediately moved away again, distancing herself from him as she headed towards the staircase. “Yeah, I’ll go freshen up right now,” she nervously said.
She quickly sprinted up the stairs and went into the bedroom. He was left in the kitchen, a bit confused as to why she walked away that quickly. He swiftly brushed the thought aside and went back to his cooking.
Meanwhile, behind the closed doors, she dashed to the bathroom and splashed herself with cold water at the sink. “Aniya! I can’t take this. Why does he have to touch me like that? His every touch stirs up my feelings for him. What should I do? What should I do, Kang Sora?” she questioned herself. Gazing into the mirror as water dripped down her face, she told herself that she must find a way to avoid coming in contact with him. However, she knew it would be nearly impossible to do so since she’s staying at his place and moreover sharing the same bed. Her question now was how to avoid close skin-ship with him for the next few days until she can stay at Melissa’s.
Grabbing a face towel to dry her wet face, she noticed a set of new toothbrushes on the counter. She touched them, sensing his thoughtfulness in making her stay more enjoyable. She walked out toward his walk-in closet and saw that he has cleared a section of his racks and drawers just for her. Now it was much harder for her to break him the news that she will be moving out soon when he was so considerate to make her feel at home. At some point, she wanted to cry as the feelings of insecurity, love, lust and confusion all came her way at once and she was scared because she didn’t know what to do. “Why are you doing this to me, Park Jungsu? Why? Why do all this and all those kisses when you won’t even make me yours? How am I supposed to face you?”
…
After taking a shower to clear her mind a bit, she headed downstairs to the dining room where he was waiting for her.
“Are you all freshened up already?” he asked with smirk.
She only replied with a short “Mmm” as she sat down at the table.
Her dreary response made him to wonder if something happened at work. However, he refrained himself from asking as he thought she may not want to talk about it when she’s off work and thereby changing the subject. “So…what do you think of my culinary skills?” he asked with humour, hoping to lift up her mood a bit as he waits for her to tease him back.
To his relief, she did as she studied the food presented before her. “Well…the presentation is alright. In terms of the taste, I’ll have to try it out first. But who would of thought the almighty president and CEO of JSE will cook for someone, right?”
“That’s right, so you should feel ecstatic and honoured to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and pleasure to try out my cooking,” he arrogantly stated.
She chuckled at his remark as she shook her head. He was glad to see her beautiful smile back on her face. Then he told her to hurry and try the food before it gets cold. With his fork, he twirled the pasta and offered it to her. It took her a second to accept his feeding, but as soon as she had a taste of the pasta, her eyes widened.
“Omo!” she blurted out.
He leaned forward with a triumphant smirk and said, “Well? Delicious, isn’t it?”
She narrowed her eyes at him as she swallowed down her food. “It’s acceptable, but far from a chef’s standard.”
He laughed from her comment. “Well, if that’s the case, then I should cook more often for you to improve my culinary skills.”
Although she may have said that it was ‘acceptable’, it actually tasted quite delicious. But she didn’t want him to get overly conceited with her praising on his cooking. As she continued with her food, a bit of the sauce was left on the corner of her lips. The minute he noticed, he reached out his hand and gently wiped the sauce from her lips with his thumb. Instead of cleaning his finger with a napkin, he sucked his thumb clean. “Mashta…” he stated softly as he ogled at her with desire.
She looked at him and he looked at her. Both locked their eyes on each other.
“God, she’s so beautiful. I just want to devour those luscious lips of hers…” he thought to himself as he began to leaned closer.
“God, why does he have to stare at me like this? I can’t do this!” she said to herself and quickly grabbed the glass of water in front her. She quickly drank the water before he could do what she thinks he was about to do and that was to kiss her. She couldn’t let him do that as she could foresee what will happen in the end.
He was confounded the moment she picked up the glass as he was about to kiss her. At that moment, he thought perhaps she was too exhausted from work and so he didn’t pursue any further. Nonetheless, he felt a bit disenchanted when he couldn’t kiss her.
When she placed the glass back onto the table and said, “Oppa, let’s hurry and finish our dinner so that I can help you wash the dishes.”
With a short chuckle, he duly obeyed. “Arasso…ppalli then…”
…
After dinner, they cleared the table together. He offered to clean the dishes, but she insisted on doing it herself since he already went through the trouble to cook dinner. She told him to go take a shower first while she washes the dishes.
“Are you sure? It’ll be faster if we worked together,” he indicated.
“Yes, I’m sure. Now go upstairs and take a shower. You smell like grease and oil right now,” she assured him as she pushed him from behind and towards the stairway. “Ppalli!” she said as she waved him off.
Once he was done, he changed into his grey sweatpants with a white tank top and headed downstairs to see if she was done with the dishes. He quietly minced over to where she was. While she was drying the dishes with a dry cloth, he wrapped his arms around her waist from behind and pulling himself close to her as he sank his face into her hair.
At that point, Sora almost dropped the plate that was in her hand as she was startled by his embrace from behind. His fresh scent from his shower gel was enough to stir up the heat in her body. She began to feel the tingling sensation surging through her body again. Knowing that she should push him away, but her body and mind were not in sync as if she was paralyzed by his embrace. In her paralysis state, he turned her around and leaned forward until their lips touched as he held her face with his hand.
“Kang Sora! What are you doing? Stop! You have to push him away until you are confidently sure that he wants you!” she argued within herself.
He started off by kissing her slowly, gently caressing her lips with his and just when he was about to turn it up a notch, Sora finally found the strength to pull herself away.
When she did, Park Jungsu was a bit surprised from her pullback. “Is something wrong, Sora-ah?” he asked as he looked at her with his hand behind her cheekbone.
“Yeah, I’m alright. I just need to finish up these dishes. Why don’t you go upstairs and rest? After this, I still need to do a bit of work on my laptop,” she suggested, turning herself back to the dishes.
With worry in his eyes, he indicated, “But it’s already eleven in the evening. Can’t you work on it tomorrow at work?”
“I know it’s late, but I really need to work on it a bit or else it’ll just drag for a long time.” She caressed his face as she explained.
Despite not being pleased with her plan, he still gave in to her request. “Fine, but promise me you won’t overwork yourself and don’t stay up too late. If you’re tir—”
Before he could complete his sentence, she interjected. “Arasso…arasso…Oppa, you’re even more naggy than my eomma.” She hurried him upstairs after bidding him goodnight.
…
When she was finished with the dishes, she headed upstairs and made a visit to the bedroom first. Before sleeping, he had left the floor lights on so that she could find her way around the bedroom in the dark. With the dim lit room, she walked over to his side of the bed and watched him sleep for a bit.
“Exactly how do you feel about me, oppa? Do you even know how I feel whenever you hold back every time? Waeyo?” she contemplated herself as she traced over his eyebrows, nose and lips without touching them. Having lingered next to him for about five minutes, she turned off the floor lights and went over to his office room with a pillow and a thin cover. She lied to him about needing to work, when really she wanted to keep herself from thinking too much about him.
In his office, she sat in his chair and stared at the self-portraits of him on the wall. “You make me weak whenever you give me that look, do you know that, oppa?” she said. With the pillow and cover, she settled herself on the L-shaped sofa in his office – spending her second last night at his home before she moves to Melissa’s.
***
Park Jungsu woke up the next morning, finding Sora neither in bed nor anywhere in the house and it was starting to bother him. “Left for work already?” he sat up from his bed and said to himself. He then got up and went to the bathroom to freshen up before work. As he got out of the shower and made his way to his closet, he began to wonder why she had left the house so early for the past two days. While changing into his business suit, he noticed that she still hasn’t hung up her clothes or even used the drawer he had cleared for her. “Why hasn’t she unpack her things yet?” another thought breezed through his mind.
All ready for work, he headed out to his garage and settled himself in his Aston Martin. At the same time, he took out his phone and tried calling Sora. But all he got was an automatic voice telling him that ‘The person you are trying to reach is unavailable to take your call right now. Please try again later.’ Since he wasn’t able to reach her by calling, he decided to send her a message, asking her to call him back she when sees it.
…
Sitting in his office, he was having a hard time focusing on his work. He had tried calling her a few more times before, but still no answer. Somehow he felt like something wasn’t right. For the past two days, he wasn’t able to see her sleep next to him in bed during the mornings as he had hoped. Then, she was acting different last night. It almost felted like they were physically close, but emotionally distant. As he got immersed and lost in his thoughts, he didn’t even notice that Miranda had walked in.
Miranda called his name a few times but still failed to get his attention until she waved her hand in his face. “President!” she called as she signalled him with her hand. “Are you alright?”
Park Jungsu looked at Miranda, still a bit aloof from his thought. “Yes, Miranda, something you’d like to see me about?”
Miranda gave him a confused look and informed him of his scheduled meeting. “Sir, you have a meeting with all the managers from all departments in five minutes.”
After recalling his schedule, he quickly stood up from his chair. “Yes, the meeting…umm…let’s head downstairs then, shall we?” he indicated as he grabbed his phone from his desk.
“Sir, the meeting is held in the conference room down the hall, not downstairs,” Miranda corrected as she began to wonder what has gotten into her president.
“Oh yeah, then let’s go to the conference room down the hall.”
…
As the meeting began, the managing staff took turns to present their monthly reports on the current performances of their artists and idols, as well as the company’s current financial state and prospects. However, Park Jungsu was absentminded during the meeting as he kept looking at his phone under the table, waiting for a call from Sora.
“President Park, so what do you think we should do?” asked one of the managers, waiting for him to give them feedback and guidance.
Miranda saw him busy with his phone and leaned forward as she whispered, “President! Manager Lee is asking what we should do.”
Hearing Miranda’s voice, he perked up and gaped around the room. “Huh? What did you just say?”
The manager presented the plan once again and asked Park Jungsu for advices and guidance. After paying attention to the meeting and discussion, he quickly offered his responses to the different managers in the room.
When the meeting finished, everyone was dismissed and he was still sitting his chair, staring blankly at his phone. Miranda noticed his inattentive behaviour during the meeting and had to ask him what was wrong as he’s not usually like this. “Is everything alright, President? I mean, from the time I came to your office up till now, you seemed a bit absentminded and distracted with your phone. Are you waiting for a phone call?” she asked.
“It’s nothing, really,” he replied as he leaned back on his chair.
“Oh come on! You call that nothing? Men are usually absentminded and troubled because of two things, either money or women. And I can I assure you that money is not the reason given your position, so it must be the latter. Is it about Kang Sora-ssi?” she asked.
He impressively looked at Miranda, amazed by how she knew what was troubling him. Then he explained how he got Sora to stay with him at his place and how he’s just worried that she may be overworking herself that she doesn’t even have time to call him back.
Miranda nodded and understood his concerns. “Then why don’t you try calling her again or better yet go see her at her office?”
“I should shouldn’t I? But do I have any more scheduled meetings or conference calls to do?”
Miranda chuckled and shook her head, “No, President. Even if there were, I don’t think you’ll be able to pay attention to what’s happening when your mind is just thinking about Kang Sora-ssi.”
He quickly stood up from his chair and put on an impassive expression – pretending he had nothing to worry to about. “I’ll be on my way then.”
Miranda could only smile and shake her head at her president’s actions.
…
As he stepped out of the conference room, he dialed Sora’s number and tried calling.
On the other side, Sora looked at the caller ID from her phone and saw him calling.
“Are you not going to answer that?” Melissa asked as she noticed Sora leaving her phone unanswered.
“I don’t know what to say to him,” she replied with frustration as she covered her face with her hands.
“What do you mean you don’t know what to say to him? I mean, hasn’t he been trying to reach you since this morning? If you don’t answer, he’s going to get ideas that you’re trying to avoid him.”
“I know, but I can’t.” She watched her phone ring until the screen indicated a ‘Missed Call’.
“You know that if he can’t reach you, he might show up here looking for you if he’s desperately calling,” Melissa pointed out.
“Well, I have a meeting outside with some of our business affiliates in an hour and I should get going.”
“Sora, you know this isn’t going to solve any problems by just hiding. Why can’t you just tell him how you feel and the concerns you have. Men are a bit slow when it comes to understanding women and that is why you have to tell them straight out how you feel,” Melissa stated as she watched Sora gather her things.
She stopped and looked at Melissa. She understood what Melissa was saying, but she was afraid of what might happen after doing so. Will she scare him away if she told him truly how she felt and how much she longs for him whenever he caresses and kisses her? She didn’t want to take the risk of losing him as she has fallen deeper for him than she had originally thought. “Just give me some time to think about it,” she told Melissa as she exited her office.
…
“What is going on? She hasn’t been picking up my phone calls the whole morning. Did something happen?” Park Jungsu asked himself worriedly and started to make his way to her company building.
As expected, he went up to her office floor and found Melissa at her desk.
“Ms. Kim, is Sora alright? Is she in her office?” he asked impatiently.
“Don’t worry, President Park. She is fine, just a bit busy lately and you just missed her ten minutes ago.”
“Where did she go?”
“She’s off to some meetings with our business affiliates outside the office.”
“Do you know when will she be back?”
Melissa looked at him and shook her head. “Not sure, she didn’t say since they scheduled them privately with her.”
He thanked Melissa for the info. She could see the bothered look on his face and knew she shouldn’t meddle in their business. However, she couldn’t help herself from stepping in.
“You know, President Park, I don’t mean to be nosy or anything, but exactly what happened when you two were in Japan?” she probed.
He looked at her, speechless. Then Melissa led him to a common sitting area next to Sora’s office to further discuss about Sora and his current situation.
“I don’t know what happened. I mean, when we were in Hakone, we were about to…” he hesitated a bit and then continued, “…you know about to do…that, but she passed out before we could even get there. But everything seemed to be fine until these past two days when we returned from the trip. I tried to get close to her, but somehow I think she’s trying to distance herself from me. I mean, this didn’t occur to me until I thought back to last night and this morning.”
“Are you sure? I mean, Sora isn’t the type to do things without reason.”
With his eyebrows furrowed, he gave Melissa an intense look. “Did she tell you anything about me?” he questioned with concern clouding on his face.
Melissa shook her head. “All I know is that she’s bothered by something and for her to avoid your phone calls – I think you’re part of the reaso—” She suddenly stopped after realizing her slip of tongue about Sora not answering his calls.
“You mean she knew I was calling, but purposely not answering them?” he asked, as his face masked with discontent.
“Well, only when I was with her, I don’t know about the other times when you tried calling,” Melissa confessed, a bit worried from what she had just told him.
Letting out a short sigh, he looked out the city through the glass window and rubbed his face with anxiety. Then he turned around and thanked Melissa for her time as he made his way out of the building.

After finishing her meetings at seven in the evening, Sora drove out to the side of Han River. She sat inside her car, staring at the river flowing before her as she began to contemplate about her current relationship with Park Jungsu.
Many thoughts began to run through her mind. Was their relationship moving too quickly? Was it why he was holding back, so that they can take things slowly? Was it possible to fall in love with someone in this short amount of time?
Spending almost four hours alone by the Han River, she took the time to think things through. Although she didn’t have much luck in solving any problems, but she knew one thing for sure and that was she’s truly in love with him. From the time he first kissed her, to when he risked his life to protect and saved her from that stalker Chang, to how he took care of her when she fell sick in Japan. Reminiscing about all the things he’s done for her was enough to ensure her own self that he was the one she wanted to be with for the rest of her life. However, whether he felt the same way about her or not was what’s concerning her.
Before heading back to his place, she decided that perhaps time apart will show her how he truly feels about her.
***
It was quarter to twelve in the evening when Sora arrived back at Park Jungsu’s place. She entered inside, only to find him sitting on the sofa in his living room.
She nervously notified him that she has returned. “I’m back.”
There was silence for a moment until he finally spoke. “It’s about time you come back, Sora-ah.” He stood up and turned around, facing her. “Do you know have any idea what time it is right now?”
From the serious expression on his face, she knew she has got some answering to do and that it was inevitable especially when she ignored all his phone calls today.
“It’s late, I know and we should get some rest,” she replied, sounding unbothered but her heart was racing by hearing the tone of his voice.
“Sora-ah, it’s almost quarter to twelve in the evening, not quarter to twelve in the afternoon,” he upsettingly stated as he walked over to her. Shaking his head in disbelief, he told her, “The least you could do was give me a call to let me know that you’re okay. Do you know how worried I was just sitting here all by myself, waiting for you to come back?”
He looked away for a moment, trying to calm down while Sora stood there silently without a word. Deep down she really wanted to say she was sorry for making him worry. However she was having trouble telling him that.
Taking another deep breath, he fixated his eyes on her. “I’ve been trying to call you since the morning. Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
The question he had just asked was one that she had hoped to avoid. “I was too busy and probably left my phone on my desk while I was in the meetings,” she said, lying about the last part of her sentence as she had her phone with her the entire time.
“Did you not see my messages?”
“I…did…” she reluctantly said.
“You did…So why didn’t you message me back?” he asked, staring at her.
“I was busy with work, okay?” she said while looking away and irritated.
“So you were so busy that you couldn’t take a minute or two to tell me that?” His tone of voice was starting to intensify.
She looked at him with distress. “What do you want me to do? Call you every five to ten minutes each day?” she argued angrily, upset on how he’s being uptight about a few missed calls.
He snorted with dismay and said furiously, “What do I want you to do? No, Sora! What do you want me to do? You’re the one who is avoiding me for almost the entire day and why is that?” He looked at her with anger.
“Look, just because I didn’t reply to your messages or phone calls do not mean I’m trying to avoid you. I’m quite busy with my work if you haven’t noticed already.”
With her mention about work again, he grew even more upset. “Work? It’s always about your work, isn’t it? Don’t you ever consider about me?”
Her eyes widened, not believing what he had just said. She pointed at herself as her voice started to tremble, “Me? Don’t consider about you?” Her eyes began to water up as sad emotions took over. “How can you say that? The only person who’s not being considerate is you, Park Jungsu!”
Tears were rolling down her face as she charged out the front door. It took a few seconds for him to realize what he had just done. “Sora-ah!” he yelled while panicking, calling her back as he chased after her.
By the time he reached outside, she had driven off in her car as he tried to run after her with no success. There he was, in the middle of his driveway, panting helplessly as he watched her drive off. He quickly went back into his house, trying to call her with his phone. “Come on Sora-ah, please pick up…pick up, please…” he said to himself, shuddering with worry. However, there was no answer as she had switched off her phone.
…
After giving several attempts to call her, he plodded up to his bedroom with feelings of sorrow heaving up inside. Angry at himself, he clinched his hand into a fist and punched the wall with frustration. He turned his back, leaning against the wall and slid down onto the floor with cuts on his hand. "What did you do, Park Jungsu? What were you thinking? You even made her cry…What the hell are you going to do now?" He placed his hand over his eyes as he began to weep for what he did in the living room.
His heart was aching with regret when he recalled the moment he saw the tears rolled down her face. He didn’t know things would turn out to be like this.
…
As she continued to drive off, she wiped her tears with her hands while weeping with sadness. She pulled over to the side of the road. “If only you knew how I feel about you, stupid Park Jungsu!” she said to herself with her head against the wheel. There she was, alone on the side of the road during the middle of the night, crying from what just happened back at his place and knows that things were not going to be the same as how they first started.
